The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has earned global recognition for performing the world’s first Transhumeral Targeted Sensory Reinnervation (TSR) surgery. This landmark procedure, carried out on 22-year-old software engineering student Moses Mwendwa, represents a significant leap in medical innovation and amputee rehabilitation.

A Revolutionary Procedure

Announced on May 6, the TSR surgery aimed to restore sensation to the stump of Mwendwa’s left arm, which had been amputated above the elbow following a life-threatening condition called compartment syndrome.

The seven-hour procedure rerouted severed nerves from the amputated limb to the remaining skin, effectively creating a “neural sensory map.” This breakthrough allows the brain to interpret touch, temperature, and pain as if originating from the missing limb.

“Feeling my missing hand again after believing it was gone forever—that’s not just medicine, that’s magic,” Mwendwa shared during a press conference, reflecting on his life-changing experience.

Addressing Phantom Limb Pain

Amputation often leaves patients with phantom limb sensations—an illusion of the lost limb accompanied by pain and psychological distress. By creating a functional sensory map, the TSR surgery not only restores sensation but also offers better pain management and enhanced control for prosthetic devices.

Dr. Benjamin Wabwire, Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at KNH, explained, “This neural mapping is not just about restoring feeling. It represents a paradigm shift in how we approach pain management and prosthetic use for amputees.”

The Team Behind the Historic Achievement

The procedure was spearheaded by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including:

  • Prof. Ferdinand Nang’ole – Consultant Plastic Surgeon, KNH/UoN.
  • Dr. Benjamin Wabwire – Head of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, KNH.
  • Prof. Alexander Gardetto – Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Specialist from Italy.

They were supported by a dedicated team of surgeons, anaesthetists, and nurses, including:

  • Dr. Dorsi Jowi, Dr. Christine Nyabuto, and Dr. Rachel Machiya (KNH and UoN).
  • The anaesthesia team led by Dr. John Mwanzia and Dr. Ruth Nyambura.
  • Nursing team members Erick Odongo, Mercy Chepkemoi, and Esther Munga.

A New Era for African Medicine

The TSR surgical camp, held between April 28 and May 2, marked a defining moment for African healthcare. By successfully conducting this groundbreaking procedure, KNH has cemented its position as a leader in global medical innovation.

Conclusion

This historic surgery not only changes the life of Moses Mwendwa but also paves the way for future advancements in amputation care. It underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and cutting-edge techniques in transforming patient outcomes.
