Kenyan national Stephen Munyakho, once facing execution in Saudi Arabia, is now set to reunite with his family after the Muslim World League (MWL) stepped in to pay $1 million (Ksh129.5 million) in blood money, or ‘diya,’ securing his release.

Years of Appeals Culminate in Freedom

Munyakho’s journey to freedom began after he was convicted of manslaughter in 2011, a sentence later upgraded to murder under Saudi law. For over a decade, his family and Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs fought tirelessly for his release, appealing to various authorities.

The breakthrough came in August 2024, when President William Ruto personally appealed to Sheikh Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the MWL, during the Sheikh’s visit to State House, Nairobi.

$1 Million Payment Secures Release

Responding to President Ruto’s request, Dr. Al-Issa facilitated the payment of $1 million to the victim’s family, as required under Saudi law. This gesture marked the final step in securing Munyakho’s freedom.

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar confirmed the successful negotiations, stating:
“Legal formalities have been completed, and the $1 million diya has been paid. Kenyans must, however, remember to respect the laws of the countries they live in. While the government can intervene, there are limits.”

The Role of the Muslim World League

Founded in 1962 and headquartered in Mecca, the Muslim World League was initially established to promote Islamic teachings and unity among Muslim nations. Over the years, its mission has expanded to include humanitarian aid, interfaith dialogue, and cultural diplomacy.
