Businesses in Bee Center and parts of Umoja Estate, Nairobi, are beginning to reopen after a chaotic Friday incident where a gang of youths on motorbikes wreaked havoc, robbing residents and causing panic. The disruption forced traders to shut down operations, leaving many in fear and uncertainty throughout the weekend.

Chaos Erupts as Gangs Target Businesses and Residents

The incident occurred around midday on Friday, with gangs of youths riding noisy motorbikes storming the Bee Center area. Witnesses reported loud honking and intimidating behavior as the thugs harassed locals and looted shops.

John, a barber in Bee Center, described the unsettling scene:
“I was attending to a customer when I heard the commotion. Motorbikes were racing and honking outside. We quickly locked the shop to stay safe.”

Parents in the area have since expressed concerns for their teenagers, fearing they might be mistaken for gang members amid heightened vigilance by residents and police.

Police Respond Swiftly to Contain the Situation

Following distress calls from residents, police officers, in collaboration with local business owners, arrived at the scene to disperse the gangs. Authorities arrested 38 suspects and confiscated seven motorcycles believed to have been used in the crimes.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrests, noting that the suspects face charges including robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony, and obstruction. Several stolen mobile phones were also recovered.

Recurring Crime Hotspot Identified

Residents have labeled the stretch along Spring Road, from Bee Center roundabout to Kayole Corner, as a crime hotspot. Edgar Kamau, a local resident, highlighted the persistent threat:
“Last week, I was mugged along this stretch, and my phone was taken by a group of youths. It’s become a playground for thieves.”

Bee Center’s strategic location, linking estates such as Jacaranda, Kayole, Umoja 1, and Nasra, makes it a prime target for gangs. Past incidents include a bicycle shop losing its entire stock during 2024’s political demonstrations and other businesses suffering vandalism and theft.

Heightened Security Measures and Call for Vigilance

The incident has spurred police to increase patrols in the area and along other major Nairobi roads, including Thika Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road. Residents and traders have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

While businesses have started to reopen, the lingering fear has kept some customers away. Authorities and community leaders are now working to restore confidence and ensure safety in the area.
