Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship ended in defeat on Saturday, sparking a mix of disappointment and renewed resolve among residents of his Nyanza political stronghold. Despite the setback, many have called for Odinga to return to Kenyan politics, emphasizing his pivotal role as the country’s leading opposition figure.

Mixed Reactions to AUC Loss
The announcement of Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as the winner of the tightly contested AUC election left sections of Nyanza residents feeling disheartened.
In Suna East, Migori County, Bunge la Wananchi speaker Okosi Elijah acknowledged the loss but expressed readiness to welcome Odinga back to the Kenyan political arena. Speaking to Ramogi Radio, Elijah reiterated Odinga’s enduring leadership in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and urged him to collaborate with President William Ruto for the betterment of the nation.
Former Suna West parliamentary aspirant Dave Odhiambo also appealed to young people to stop criticizing Odinga on social media, emphasizing the respect owed to his enduring legacy.
Support for Raila’s Return to Opposition Leadership
In Bondo, Siaya County, Odinga’s supporters framed the AUC loss as an opportunity for Kenya rather than a defeat. Led by Fredrick Agola, they expressed optimism about Odinga’s ability to effectively hold President Ruto’s administration accountable as the leader of the opposition.
Residents Clifford Adori and Nyakwar Omoga, while expressing their disappointment, shared hopes for Odinga’s resilience in Kenyan politics, particularly as a strong contender in the 2027 general elections.
“Odinga is the only person capable of keeping Ruto in check. Many things have gone wrong in his absence,” one resident noted, adding that his leadership is vital for steering the country’s political direction.
Canceled Celebrations in Bondo
Supporters in Bondo had planned celebratory events in anticipation of an AUC victory. However, the celebrations were called off after Odinga lost to Youssouf, highlighting the high stakes and emotional investment in his candidacy.
Despite the disappointment, the message from Nyanza remains clear: Raila Odinga is not just a political figure but a symbol of hope and resilience. His supporters are ready to rally behind him as he resumes his role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
