President William Ruto has announced significant changes to his Cabinet, replacing key figures in a reshuffle aimed at strengthening his administration’s performance. The announcement, made on Wednesday, March 26, saw Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi dismissed after an eight-month tenure and replaced by Geoffrey Ruku, the current Member of Parliament for Mbeere North.

Key Cabinet Changes
In a statement released by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the reshuffle reflects Ruto’s vision of enhancing Kenya’s socioeconomic transformation. Among the notable changes:
- Geoffrey Ruku: Nominated to replace Justin Muturi as Public Service Cabinet Secretary.
- Hanna Wendot: Nominated to lead the Ministry of Gender and Culture.
- Aden Duale: Transferred from the Ministry of Environment to the Ministry of Health.
- Deborah Barasa: Moved from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Environment.
The nominees, including Ruku and Wendot, will undergo parliamentary vetting before their appointments are confirmed.
“The nominees are expected to bring to Cabinet not only their expertise but also the wisdom from their diverse life journeys,” Ruto’s statement emphasized.
Justin Muturi’s Departure
Justin Muturi’s exit has drawn widespread attention, particularly given his role in Ruto’s administration since its inception. His tenure as Public Service Cabinet Secretary was marked by mounting criticism, with allegations of incompetence and strained relations with the administration.
Just a day before the reshuffle, Ruto openly criticized Muturi during an Iftar session at State House, citing delays in establishing Waqf—a Muslim charitable endowment—as a key failure under his leadership.
“It has taken too long. There’s no reason for the delay. I had a problem with the AG who was there. He was fairly incompetent,” Ruto remarked.
Muturi had previously dismissed resignation rumors and maintained his focus on accountability within the government. His departure marks a significant turning point, given his history as a close ally of the president.
What’s Next for the New Appointees?
Geoffrey Ruku, Muturi’s successor, brings extensive political experience as a sitting MP. Meanwhile, Hanna Wendot’s nomination signals a renewed focus on gender and cultural development. Both nominees are expected to bring fresh perspectives to their roles if approved by Parliament.
State House emphasized that these changes aim to restore confidence and efficiency in Cabinet operations as Kenya continues its journey toward economic recovery and social transformation.
