The Ukambani region is poised for a transformative leap after President William Ruto announced the allocation of Ksh5.2 billion to revive stalled projects across critical sectors. The announcement follows a high-level meeting at State House on Thursday, March 27, 2025, where the President engaged with regional leaders to address pressing developmental concerns.

Reviving Development in Ukambani
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accompanied by Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and other leaders, revealed that the funds would rejuvenate projects in water, housing, markets, and higher education across Makueni, Machakos, and Kitui counties. Mutuse’s statement highlighted the meeting’s outcome, emphasizing its importance for the region’s progress.
“This morning, Ukambani leaders had a productive dialogue with H.E. President William Ruto at State House. Key projects in roads, electrification, water, housing, and education will commence immediately across Makueni, Machakos, and Kitui,” the statement read.
Projects to Begin Immediately
Among the priorities is the revival of stalled road projects, which will receive a significant portion of the allocated funds. Labour CS Alfred Mutua echoed this commitment, stating, “Over Ksh5.2 billion has been allocated to restart critical infrastructure developments. Immediate implementation will ensure the region sees progress in water supply, housing, market enhancements, and higher education.”
The leaders expressed gratitude to President Ruto for his dedication to fostering unity and delivering tangible results to the people of Ukambani.
Addressing Regional Concerns
The meeting’s agenda also extended beyond financial allocations. Leaders revisited a March 1 discussion where they had presented seven key demands to the President, focusing on road infrastructure, education standards, water resources, electricity provision, job creation, business support, and professional appointments within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Additionally, the leaders identified five further priorities, including improved access to leadership empowerment opportunities and strategies to advance regional developmental goals.
Expanding the Scope
The discussions also acknowledged counties with a significant Kamba population, such as Nairobi, Kilifi, Mombasa, Taveta, Embu, and Kwale. This broader scope aims to ensure inclusivity and equitable resource distribution.
National Security Adviser Monica Juma and several Principal Secretaries also participated in the meeting, signifying the government’s commitment to addressing Ukambani’s developmental needs comprehensively.
Moving Forward
As projects kick off, the people of Ukambani can expect tangible changes in their daily lives. The allocated funds mark a crucial step towards realizing the region’s developmental potential and fostering a united and prosperous future for its residents.
