Governor George Natembeya of Trans-Nzoia County has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of embezzling Ksh. 1.4 billion in county funds. The arrest has sparked significant political and public reactions, with supporters and critics weighing in on the matter.

Governor Detained for Questioning

Governor Natembeya was taken into custody at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi on Monday morning, where he is reportedly being held for questioning. His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, revealed that Natembeya’s legal team has been denied access to him, raising concerns about the transparency of the process.

“They have detained our client, yet we are being denied the opportunity to provide him with legal counsel,” Njiru said.

Investigation Into Financial Mismanagement

The EACC has confirmed that the governor is being investigated for procurement irregularities, abuse of office, and bribery related to the fraudulent acquisition of Ksh. 1.4 billion. These alleged offenses reportedly occurred between the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years.

The accusations center around three key county projects:

  1. Rehabilitation and modernization of Kenyatta Stadium (Phase 1A)
  2. Construction of county headquarters offices
  3. Construction of Tom Mboya Hospital

EACC claims Governor Natembeya influenced the awarding of tenders and received kickbacks through intermediaries.

Searches and Raids Targeting Key Individuals

In a related operation, EACC officers raided Natembeya’s Kitale residence, along with offices and homes of other individuals linked to the alleged corruption.

“The Governor is accused of awarding contracts to specific contractors and benefitting from kickbacks through proxies,” the commission stated.

Political Backlash and Support

The arrest has sparked political controversy, with DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa criticizing the move as an act of intimidation against opposition leaders.

“We will not allow the justice system to be weaponized to harass opposition figures,” Wamalwa declared.

He further linked the arrest to similar alleged harassment faced by other opposition members, including Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya.

Meanwhile, Natembeya’s supporters gathered outside EACC offices, demanding his immediate release.

Public Outcry and Next Steps

The case has raised serious questions about accountability and governance in county administrations. While supporters view the arrest as politically motivated, others argue it is a necessary step toward curbing corruption in public offices.

As the investigation unfolds, the EACC has assured the public of a thorough and impartial process. Governor Natembeya remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
