Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked controversy by urging residents of the Mt. Kenya region to boycott musicians who recently met with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The meeting, held on Thursday, brought together prominent musicians and producers from the region. Deputy President Kindiki described the session as a pivotal step towards addressing challenges faced by the creative industry, particularly exploitative practices within the sector.

“The creative industry is a multibillion-shilling business, and continuous engagement with performing artists and stakeholders is crucial. We aim to support them through policy reforms and protection of intellectual property rights,” Kindiki stated during the event.

Artists Share Success Stories

During the meeting, several artists shared their experiences, including how initiatives like the Social Health Insurance Fund have positively impacted their lives. The Deputy President pledged further support for creative professionals, emphasizing the importance of fostering a thriving entertainment sector in Kenya.

Gachagua Labels Musicians’ Actions as Betrayal

In a sharp rebuttal, Rigathi Gachagua criticized the musicians for attending the meeting, describing their actions as a betrayal of the Mt. Kenya community. Speaking on Friday, Gachagua called for a boycott of their music, claiming the artists had undermined regional unity.

“Those who went to Kindiki’s home should not expect support from our people. No one should listen to their music or invite them to perform in clubs,” he declared.

Allegations Against Musicians

Gachagua went on to accuse an unnamed artist of spreading falsehoods about him and his Democratic Change Party (DCP). He alleged that the musician, whom he labeled as unqualified for political leadership, had attempted to tarnish his reputation.

“One musician accused me of denying him a chance to run for MP. Imagine someone who dropped out of school in Class Two wanting to be a leader. How can such a person represent the people?” Gachagua remarked, in a thinly veiled attack.

Political Tensions Deepen

This latest spat underscores the growing political divisions in the Mt. Kenya region. While Deputy President Kindiki’s outreach to artists highlights efforts to unify and empower creatives, Gachagua’s response signals resistance to perceived alliances that exclude him.

The public remains divided on the issue, with some supporting Gachagua’s call for regional solidarity and others praising Kindiki’s engagement with the creative industry.
