Plans by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to launch the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) at Kasarani Indoor Arena on June 4, 2025, have hit a major roadblock. Sports Kenya, the government agency managing the facility, revoked the party’s booking, citing scheduling conflicts and preparations for the upcoming Confederation of African Football (CAF) CHAN 2025 tournament.
Official Reason for Cancellation
In a letter dated May 21, Sports Kenya attributed the decision to prior reservations by sports teams and the need to prepare the venue for CHAN 2025.
“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams. Additionally, no further bookings are being accepted due to preparations for the upcoming Championships for African Nations (CHAN 2025) within the complex,” read the letter.
DCP Calls Out Political Interference
Hezron Obaga, DCP Secretary General, expressed outrage over the cancellation, describing it as a “blow to democracy” and a deliberate attempt to frustrate the party’s activities.
“The indefinite cancellation of our booking is an affront to democracy and a clear attempt by the government to stifle the DCP launch. Public facilities like Kasarani should be accessible to all Kenyans for legitimate purposes,” Obaga stated.
The party also referenced incidents of alleged harassment during its unveiling on May 15 and a subsequent event in Kakamega on May 24, where members claimed they were targeted by security agencies.
Event Postponed
The DCP has now postponed the much-anticipated launch, citing the need to find an alternative venue.
“We regret to inform our supporters nationwide that the launch, initially scheduled for June 3, 2025, has been postponed. A new date and venue will be communicated in due course,” the party announced.
Contradictions in Timeline
According to the DCP, Sports Kenya initially proposed moving the event to June 3, 2025, and issued an invoice amounting to Kshs. 3,706,800 for the revised booking. The party complied but was later informed of the indefinite cancellation.
“We were issued a formal invoice and proceeded with preparations. The sudden reversal of this decision is both suspicious and unwarranted,” Obaga remarked.
