In a significant step towards tackling housing challenges in Kisumu County, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has donated five acres of family land in the Kirembe area to the government for the construction of affordable housing units.

President William Ruto, during his visit to Kisumu, announced the initiative, praising Odinga’s gesture as a boost to the government’s ambitious housing program. The donated land will host a Ksh. 3.5 billion investment, aimed at constructing modern housing units to benefit over 1,000 residents.
Accelerating Housing Development in Kisumu
President Ruto emphasized that the ongoing affordable housing projects in Kisumu will significantly benefit the region. The first phase of the program targets the construction of 15,000 units, part of the government’s commitment to improving housing ownership among Kenyans.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony at Kirembe grounds, Ruto highlighted the ongoing Lumumba housing project, which is expected to benefit an additional 2,000 residents.
“Our aim is to ensure every Kenyan has access to decent housing. This project is a clear demonstration of our commitment to homeownership,” Ruto said.
Collaboration for a Better Kenya
Raila Odinga, who accompanied President Ruto at the event, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the government’s development agenda.
“This five-acre donation is a step towards addressing the housing needs of Kisumu residents. The project will not only provide homes but also integrate essential amenities like schools and hospitals,” Odinga stated.
The former Prime Minister pledged to work closely with the government to address pressing issues facing Kenyans, transcending political differences for the greater good.
Ignoring Divisive Politics
President Ruto used the occasion to urge Kenyans to steer clear of divisive narratives propagated by political naysayers.
“We must unite as a nation and focus on development rather than divisive politics. This housing project is proof that collaboration can yield meaningful change,” he said.
A Vision for Kisumu’s Future
The new housing projects, including the multi-billion LV Marina housing units linked to Odinga, signal a new era of development for Kisumu. These initiatives promise to create jobs, improve living conditions, and address the growing demand for housing in the region.
