A swift manhunt following the tragic killing of a police officer in Nakuru has resulted in the arrest of seven suspects believed to be involved in the heinous crime. The operation, spearheaded by detectives, also led to the recovery of the alleged murder weapon, an AK-47 rifle.

Deadly Ambush

The officer lost his life during a routine patrol in Nakuru’s Free Area on Sunday. He and two colleagues were ambushed by a gang, leaving the officer fatally shot and his colleagues injured. The incident prompted a high-level response from the National Police Service (NPS).


Arrests and Evidence Recovery

Authorities reported that three suspects were apprehended at the scene, while four others—identified as William Nyairi Rioba, Nyari Nyamwara Maluke, Emmanuel Mwita, and Catherine Nkatha Zakayo—were captured during a raid at a lodging in the Tahidi area.

Following interrogations, the suspects led investigators to a location where the murder weapon, an AK-47 rifle, was recovered. Additionally, officers seized four mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, bus tickets dated May 25, 2025, for routes to Kehancha and Kisii, and a motorcycle.


Crime Scene Findings

A revisit to the crime scene revealed critical evidence, including three 7.62mm and one 9mm spent cartridges. Investigators also noted that one officer had sustained a deep cut to his left hand from a machete during the ambush.


Injured Officers and Continuing Investigations

The injured officers are currently undergoing treatment at Nakuru Level Five Hospital, while the arrested suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents in Nakuru and across the country, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
