Grammy Award Trophies

President William Ruto has doubled down on his mission to position Kenya as the entertainment capital of Africa by revealing new details about plans to host an African edition of the Grammy Awards in Nairobi.

Speaking during the 97th Kenya Music Festival State Concert in Sagana, Nyeri, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, Ruto emphasized his government’s commitment to turning the creative industry into a powerhouse of jobs, revenue, and global recognition.

He confirmed that talks are already underway with the Recording Academy, the organization behind the Grammys, and that he is scheduled to meet its team in the United States next month to finalize discussions. According to the President, Kenya is not only seeking to host the Grammys in Nairobi but also establish world-class music studios that will raise the standard of music production in the region.

“Next month in the United States, I will meet with the Recording Academy to fast-track plans for building state-of-the-art studios in Kenya and to set the foundation for hosting the African edition of the Grammy Awards right here in Nairobi,” said Ruto.

Why Hosting the Grammys Matters for Kenya

If successful, Kenya’s bid to host the Grammys would mark a historic first for Africa, bringing the world’s most prestigious music award ceremony to the continent. This would instantly boost Kenya’s global profile as a music and creative hub, placing it on the same stage as other international cultural powerhouses.

The hospitality industry is among the key beneficiaries, with Kenya’s luxury hotels, resorts, and event venues expected to welcome top global artists, celebrities, and tourists. Local businesses—from transport services to event planners, caterers, and media houses—would also reap from the massive economic trickle-down effect.

Moreover, hosting the Grammys would create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for young Kenyans, particularly in entertainment, logistics, technology, security, and media production.

Kenya’s Ksh500 Million Investment

Ruto disclosed that Kenya has already demonstrated commitment to this ambitious project by investing Ksh500 million in 2024 to support the Recording Academy’s expansion into Africa. He confirmed that the funds were fully paid in December last year.

“Actually, the money for the Grammys has already been paid. We are not about to pay; we already paid Ksh500 million,” Ruto affirmed.

This investment places Kenya at the forefront of the Grammy Awards’ Africa and Middle East expansion strategy, which seeks to support music creators, strengthen intellectual property rights, and showcase the region’s musical heritage to the world.

A Boost for Kenya’s Global Image

Kenya has consistently attracted global attention through international conferences, sports tournaments, and cultural events. From co-hosting the CAF African Nations Championship 2024 to being awarded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, Kenya is steadily cementing its role as a continental event hub.

Bringing the Grammys to Nairobi would not only amplify this momentum but also attract international media coverage, global tourists, and long-term cultural investments, solidifying Kenya’s status as the entertainment gateway of Africa.

About the Grammys and Expansion into Africa

The Grammy Awards, established in 1959, are widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious music awards, celebrating excellence across diverse genres. Over the years, legends like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Beyoncé have graced the stage, making the Grammys a cultural phenomenon.

In recent years, the Recording Academy has sought to broaden its global reach, announcing strategic expansions into Africa and the Middle East. Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, and Saudi Arabia have already signed partnerships, with Ghana and Ivory Coast in the pipeline.

By aligning itself with this expansion, Kenya has positioned Nairobi to become the home of Grammy Africa, bringing long-lasting benefits to its creative economy and tourism sector.
