More than 150 young people in Kisii County have successfully completed a four-week digital skills training under the Huawei DigiTruck program, a mobile, solar-powered digital classroom initiative that continues to transform lives in underserved communities across Kenya.
The program equipped participants with essential digital competencies including basic computer use, internet navigation, digital marketing, online safety, and entrepreneurship. The goal: to bridge the digital divide and empower youth with skills for the modern economy.
As part of the initiative, participants also engaged in a DigiTruck Innovation Competition, where they proposed solutions to local challenges using their newly acquired skills. The top three winners were awarded tablets and paired with mentors to support them in turning their ideas into reality.
Nominated MP Irene Mayaka emphasized the long-term impact of the program, stating:“The digital skills these young people have acquired—like online safety and digital marketing—are not just tools for employment; they are gateways to global opportunities and financial independence.”
She added,“Huawei’s DigiTruck program is an investment in our future. It empowers youth with knowledge that no one can take away and reinforces Kisii’s spirit of entrepreneurship and excellence.”
Julius Migos Ogamba, Cabinet Secretary for Education, praised the public-private collaboration behind the initiative, saying: “The success of the DigiTruck program in Kisii is a testimony to how well public-private partnerships align projects and programs with community needs,” he added.
He further noted: “The DigiTruck program is a powerful example of what can be achieved when the national government, county governments, the private sector, and community organizations work together. I also want to commend Computers for Schools Kenya for their outstanding role in this partnership, helping to drive digital and ICT literacy in rural areas and empower our youth for the future.”
Huawei Kenya’s Director for Public Affairs, Mr. Yuta Leng, congratulated the graduates and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to digital inclusion.
“These young people have shown that with the right tools and training, they can be powerful innovators and change-makers. Huawei remains committed to expanding digital inclusion and supporting the next generation of Kenyan leaders,” said Leng.
The DigiTruck initiative is part of Huawei’s global Tech4All program and is implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy, the Ministry of Education, ICT Authority, Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK), and other stakeholders. It supports Kenya’s Digital Superhighway and Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda by promoting inclusive access to digital tools and knowledge.
The Kisii graduation follows recent DigiTruck programs held in Baringo, Migori, and Homa Bay Counties, bringing the total number of youth trained in 2025 to over 900. In May 2025, 180 youth graduated from Kabimoi Vocational Training Centre in Baringo County. In Migori, 210 youth (95 women, 115 men) completed training at Uriri Vocational Training Centre, while Homa Bay recorded 290 graduates (143 women, 147 men) at Oriwo Boys High School.
The training covered key areas like basic computer literacy, online job opportunities, digital marketing, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. A strong emphasis was placed on online safety, teaching participants to protect personal data, identify scams, and navigate the internet responsibly.
The graduation marks a new chapter for the trainees, with certificates recognizing their skills and empowering them to explore digital entrepreneurship. The program also includes an innovation competition, encouraging participants to develop practical solutions for community challenges, fostering creativity and problem-solving.
