Nairobi, Kenya – Bonface Kariuki, a mask vendor who suffered a gunshot wound to the head during anti-police brutality protests in Nairobi, has tragically passed away. His family confirmed his death on Monday, following a harrowing week at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he had been receiving critical care.

Emily Wanjira, the family spokesperson, shared that Kariuki’s death was officially pronounced at 3:15 p.m., a day after doctors declared him brain dead. “We were outside the hospital when we got the call,” she said, her voice heavy with grief

THE TRAGIC SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

Kariuki’s ordeal began when a police officer fired a bullet that struck him during demonstrations against alleged police misconduct. He was rushed to KNH, where he underwent two delicate operations aimed at removing bullet fragments lodged in his skull.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Kariuki’s condition showed no signs of improvement. Wanjira had revealed earlier that his vital organs were functioning, but his brain activity had ceased.

“Mwangi is confirmed brain dead. We know what it means. We are just waiting for the doctor to tell us he is no more,” she said in a somber statement on Sunday.

The family’s struggles were compounded by the mounting hospital bills, which had soared past Ksh.1 million.

CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND JUSTICE

As they mourn the loss of their loved one, Kariuki’s family is now demanding accountability. They have made an emotional appeal to Kenya’s judicial system, calling for swift and decisive action against the police officers involved.

“This was an unprovoked and criminal act,” said Kariuki’s father, Jonah Kariuki. “We need to see justice served. Those responsible must be convicted and sentenced.”

The family’s plea resonates with ongoing public outcry against police brutality in Kenya, a concern that has sparked nationwide protests and calls for reform.

A BROKEN SYSTEM UNDER SCRUTINY

Kariuki’s death adds to a growing list of casualties tied to police violence, further fueling demands for accountability and systemic change. Activists have highlighted the need for comprehensive investigations, with hopes that his case will serve as a turning point in the fight against impunity.
