Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua is grappling with profound grief following the loss of his aunt, Gladys Gathoni Kahua, who passed away on June 28, 2025. Describing her as a mother figure and a cornerstone of his life since his mother’s passing in 2019, Gachagua has opened up about the emotional toll of this tragedy.

A Devastating Loss

Gachagua shared his heartbreak, saying, “Today, I am at my lowest since I lost my mother in 2019. Aunt Gathoni was more than family; she was my mentor, counsellor, cheerleader, and prayer warrior. I feel hollow and abandoned.”

He recounted the painful moments leading to her passing, receiving a 3 a.m. call notifying him that she had fallen critically ill. Acting swiftly, he arranged for her to be admitted to Jamii Hospital in Karatina and planned to visit her later that day.

A Race Against Time

Despite assurances from doctors that she was stable, Gachagua was soon informed that his aunt’s condition had deteriorated. Rushing to the hospital, he was delayed by traffic near Ruiru, losing critical time.

“I left for Karatina at 2 p.m. but got stuck in a massive traffic jam, losing about 30 minutes. By the time I arrived at 4:10 p.m., I was told I was five minutes too late. My beloved aunt had passed at 4:05 p.m.,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion.

Cherished Memories

Reflecting on their close bond, Gachagua described Aunt Gathoni as his last surviving maternal aunt and a beacon of wisdom. She played a pivotal role in his life, especially after the loss of his mother, offering unwavering support, encouragement, and spiritual guidance.

“She was my mother after my mum’s demise, my mentor, and my prayer warrior. Her folktales, Mau Mau songs, and stories of the struggle for independence were priceless. She even taught me Kimeru, always reminding me of my roots and urging me to reconnect with our Meru family.”

He fondly recalled her endearing term for him, “Kiana Kia Mwari” (son of a daughter), and how she often referred to him as the apple of her eye.

A Befitting Farewell

Gachagua vowed to honor her memory with a dignified send-off. “We loved each other deeply, and her wise counsel remains an anchor in my life. Her passing has left a void that cannot be filled, but I will ensure she is laid to rest in a manner that befits her remarkable life.”

Plans for the burial are underway as the former Deputy President navigates this period of intense grief.
