A wave of anxiety gripped Kenyans on Wednesday, June 25, following reports that two youths were abducted the previous night near the Gigiri Courtyard. The incident, which unfolded just before the much-anticipated June 25 protests, sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
Political analyst and former government advisor Mutahi Ngunyi took to social media to identify the individuals involved as Kevin Mwangi and Paul Ngari. He reassured the public that both had been released and were safe.

“I can confirm that both Paul Ngari and Kevin Maina, my former associates, have been released on free bond – P52,” Ngunyi posted on his X account at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Details of the Dramatic Abduction
Videos circulating on social media showed the two being forcibly taken into custody by unidentified individuals in civilian clothing. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as bystanders attempted to prevent the abduction. The two men were seen being hurriedly ushered into a Subaru Forester with civilian number plates before the vehicle sped off.
The duo, known for their vocal online activism, had previously worked with Ngunyi. While the reason for their apprehension remains unclear, speculation points to their outspoken criticism of state policies as a potential motive.
National Outcry and Political Reactions
The incident ignited a firestorm on social media, with many Kenyans voicing their concerns over the increasing trend of forced disappearances. People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua joined the chorus of voices condemning the abduction and demanding the pair’s release.
“This is a blatant assault on freedom of speech and human rights. We demand answers and accountability,” Karua stated in a tweet.
Kenyans likened the event to a series of unresolved disappearances allegedly linked to state operatives, further fueling fears of shrinking democratic spaces.
Connections to Protests and Past Abductions
The abduction also drew comparisons to the recent disappearance of Ndiangui Kinyagia, an activist who had been instrumental in organizing the June 25 protests. Kinyagia, who had shared a detailed schedule of protest activities, including a march to State House, has been missing since June 21.
A statement from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) disclosed that Kinyagia’s residence was surrounded by six to ten Subaru vehicles on the afternoon of his disappearance. His last known communication was with his mother at 1:00 p.m. that day.
A Growing Pattern of Concern
The Gigiri incident and similar cases of abductions highlight rising concerns over the state of civil liberties in Kenya. Activists and citizens alike are calling for transparent investigations to ensure justice for those affected and to safeguard constitutional rights.
With tensions running high ahead of the June 25 protests, the government faces mounting pressure to address these incidents and uphold the principles of freedom and democracy.
