Police in Dagoretti South have apprehended a man and recovered an AK-47 rifle reportedly stolen during the recent Gen Z protests. The firearm, one of five looted from the Kingongo Police Post during the chaotic demonstrations, was found hidden under a table at a homestead in Kirigu, Mutuini.

The operation, led by officers from Kabete Police Station in collaboration with DCI detectives, took place on Friday. Authorities revealed that the arrested individual is the brother of the primary suspect, who remains at large.

ESCAPED SUSPECT LINKED TO ATM VANDALISM

According to the police, the fugitive suspect is believed to have vandalized a Cooperative Bank ATM in Dagoretti Market before going on a reckless drinking spree while armed.

“Reports indicate the escaped suspect was seen at a local pub the previous night, allegedly carrying the stolen rifle. CCTV footage also captured him vandalizing the Cooperative Bank ATM in Dagoretti Market,” stated a police report.

Witnesses claim the suspect distributed stolen cash to friends during his night out, further complicating efforts to track him down.

CHAOS AT KINGONGO POLICE POST

The stolen firearm is part of a cache looted from the Kingongo Police Post, which was set ablaze during the protests. Criminals reportedly used the chaos as cover to infiltrate the station, stealing firearms and other equipment.

Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining weapons and apprehend the individuals responsible for the destruction and theft.

This development comes amidst heightened scrutiny over law enforcement’s handling of the demonstrations and the rising cases of violence and vandalism linked to the unrest.
