The Public Service Commission (PSC) has issued a directive requiring 205 government employees to retake sections of the Proficiency Examination for Clerical Officers conducted in September 2024. The notice was officially published in the Kenya Gazette on March 7, 2025, detailing the specific subjects each candidate failed.

Details of the Exam Results

According to the statement, the failed candidates—who are currently employed in various government ministries and departments—must resit the listed subjects to meet the required competency levels for their roles.

“The following 205 candidates did not pass the Proficiency Examination for Clerical Officers held from September 23 to 26, 2024. They are required to resit the subject(s) indicated against their names,” the notice read.

The most commonly failed subject was Human Resource Services, with multiple candidates struggling across various ministries. Other failed subjects included:

  • Communication Skills
  • Supply Services
  • Records Management
  • Accounts

The affected individuals were drawn from ministries such as Interior and National Administration, Defence, Education, National Treasury, and East African Community and Regional Development. Additionally, clerical officers from the county governments of Nakuru, Taita Taveta, and Turkana were also among those who failed.

Exam Irregularities

In a related incident, one candidate from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration had their results canceled due to involvement in examination irregularities.

“The following candidate was involved in an examination irregularity, and their results have been canceled,” stated the commission.

Success Amid Challenges

Despite the failures, there was cause for celebration as 673 clerical officers passed the examination. Their names, along with their elective subjects, were also published in the notice.

“It is notified for general information that the following 673 candidates passed the Proficiency Examination for Clerical Officers held from September 23 to 26, 2024. The elective subject is indicated against their names,” the notice announced.

Looking Ahead

The PSC has emphasized the importance of the proficiency exam in ensuring that government clerical staff meet the required professional standards. The affected individuals have been urged to prepare adequately for the resit to avoid further delays in their career progression.
