The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a firm rebuke to political leaders spreading unsubstantiated claims of election malpractice, labeling the remarks as dangerous, reckless, and deeply misleading.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Commission dismissed the allegations as unfounded and warned that such politically charged narratives—especially outside of an official election cycle—could incite public anxiety and erode trust in Kenya’s democratic institutions.
“These claims are not only baseless but threaten the very foundations of our democracy,” read the IEBC’s statement. “We urge Kenyans to reject this propaganda and remain focused on strengthening our electoral systems, not tearing them down.”
NO ELECTION PERIOD—NO BASIS FOR CLAIMS
The Commission clarified that no elections have been announced, and the country is not currently within a campaign window, making any election-related propaganda legally and constitutionally invalid.
The IEBC emphasized that it only activates the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee, as per Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act, during an official election period. Therefore, any talk of electoral misconduct at this point holds no legal merit.
This stance aligns with the 2022 Supreme Court ruling in the Sabina Chege Petition (E026 of 2022), which spelled out the Commission’s jurisdiction limitations outside a declared election period.
CALL FOR RESPONSIBLE POLITICAL CONDUCT
In the wake of mounting public scrutiny and political finger-pointing, the IEBC is calling on politicians to exercise restraint, warning that their rhetoric could undermine public trust and destabilize the political environment.
“We call upon all political actors to desist from issuing inflammatory statements that risk weakening the electoral process,” the Commission urged. “Let’s engage constructively to promote transparency and build confidence in our democratic institutions.”
FULLY CONSTITUTED AND READY TO SERVE
Now operating as a fully reconstituted Commission, the IEBC reaffirmed its independence, impartiality, and readiness to uphold democratic values as the country prepares for future electoral activities, including the anticipated 2027 General Election.
“The Commission remains committed to delivering free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the people,” it stated. “Our mandate is grounded in the Constitution and guided by international best practices.”
PUBLIC URGED TO RELY ON VERIFIED INFORMATION
In conclusion, the Commission cautioned citizens against falling prey to misinformation and called on the public to rely exclusively on official communication from the IEBC regarding electoral matters.
“We urge all Kenyans to remain vigilant and informed. Let’s rely on credible, verified sources to safeguard our democracy and ensure electoral integrity,” the IEBC concluded.
