Emali town in Makueni County was left in shock on Thursday morning after a 29-year-old woman sustained severe burns in an attempted suicide linked to a domestic dispute with her husband.

According to Nzaui Sub-County Police Commander, Agnes Kunga, officers responded to a distress call at around 8:45 am and found the woman in critical condition. She had suffered burns covering nearly 70 percent of her body.

BACKGROUND OF THE INCIDENT

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had separated from her husband about a month ago after living together in Nairobi. Following the split, she moved to Emali to stay with relatives.

Relatives disclosed that she had been battling depression and emotional distress, which may have contributed to her tragic decision.

MEDICAL RESPONSE

The victim was rushed to Best Care Hospital in Emali, where doctors stabilized her. Plans were underway to transfer her to Kenyatta National Hospital for advanced treatment, given the extent of her injuries.

Medical Officer Kelvin Mutunga confirmed that the woman is stable but needs urgent specialized care to recover from the extensive burns.

RISING MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS IN MAKUENI

Commander Agnes Kunga highlighted that the region has been experiencing a rise in depression and suicide-related cases, urging both the government and communities to take action.

“It is worrying because suicide-related cases are on the rise in Makueni. I urge the County Government to establish counseling centers in each sub-county so that people can seek help,” she stated.

PUBLIC AWARENESS AND THE NEED FOR SUPPORT

This case has reignited discussions on the importance of mental health awareness, especially among families facing domestic disputes, financial challenges, and emotional stress.

Experts emphasize that counseling services, community outreach programs, and open conversations about mental health can help prevent such tragedies.

The Emali incident serves as a reminder that mental well-being is just as important as physical health. Seeking help early can save lives.
