Babu Owino Opens Door To Coalition Talks

Thursday, September 4, 2025 — Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino has hinted at the likelihood of a new political alignment as Kenya heads toward the 2027 general elections. The youthful MP suggested that the Kenya Moja faction could, in the near future, join forces with the United Opposition coalition fronted by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a recent interview, Babu Owino underscored the value of timing in politics, referencing Ecclesiastes 3: “There is a time and a season for everything.” He maintained that Kenya Moja’s immediate focus should be on strengthening its foundation before entering any coalition arrangements.

“At the moment, we need to build our structures and organize ourselves properly so that potential partners see our readiness,” Babu noted.

Kenya Moja’s Growing Influence

The Kenya Moja movement, largely dominated by youthful parliamentarians and senators, is quickly gaining traction. Notable figures include:

  • Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna
  • Saboti MP Caleb Amisi
  • Kitutu Chache MP Antony Kibagendi
  • Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba
  • Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo

According to Owino, more than 70 lawmakers have shown interest in the movement, with several already enlisted while others are in active discussions to join.

United Opposition’s Political Heavyweights

On the other side, the United Opposition consists of seasoned leaders and former state officials. Key members include:

  • Rigathi Gachagua (Former Deputy President)
  • Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper Leader)
  • Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya Leader)
  • Eugene Wamalwa (Former Defense CS)
  • Torome Saitoti (Jubilee Party)

Additionally, respected figures like Mukhisa Kituyi (Ex-UNCTAD Secretary-General), Fred Matiang’i (Former Interior CS), and Justin Muturi (Former Attorney General) strengthen the coalition’s credibility.

What A Kenya Moja–United Opposition Pact Means For 2027

If Kenya Moja and the United Opposition merge forces, Kenya’s political dynamics could shift significantly. A coalition combining youthful energy with seasoned leadership would present a formidable challenge to President William Ruto’s quest for a second term.

Analysts suggest that such a pact could consolidate opposition votes, potentially reshaping the 2027 political battlefield and forcing Ruto’s allies to rethink their strategies.

Conclusion

Babu Owino’s remarks have ignited speculation over a possible Kenya Moja–United Opposition alliance. While the Embakasi East MP insists that groundwork must be laid first, the idea of a united opposition block is already causing ripples in Kenya’s political scene. Should the two camps come together, they could present the most formidable electoral challenge to Ruto’s presidency in 2027.
