The residents of Pipeline Estate in Nairobi are reeling in shock after a former police officer was arrested for allegedly murdering his 27-year-old wife, Susan Nabwire, before turning on the family’s house help and sexually assaulting her in a horrifying late-night ordeal.

The gruesome incident, which occurred on the night of August 13, 2025, has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over domestic violence in Kenya, particularly cases involving law enforcement officers.

What Happened on the Night of the Murder

According to family members, the suspect—identified as a 44-year-old former police officer—arrived home already enraged and picked a heated argument with his wife, accusing her of infidelity. In the middle of the confrontation, he allegedly demanded access to her phone, passwords, and mobile money PIN number.

When Susan refused, tensions escalated. The man reportedly took disturbing photos in the bedroom, forcing his wife into humiliating poses before the situation spiraled into unimaginable violence.

Brutal Killing of Susan Nabwire

At around 3:00 am, the suspect allegedly armed himself with an axe and launched a vicious attack on Susan. Eyewitness accounts, including that of the family’s house help, indicate that the man struck Susan on the neck and head with the axe before strangling her with a rope. He then stabbed her multiple times, including in the eyes, in a chilling act of brutality.

The young mother of a one-year-old child collapsed helplessly as she pleaded for mercy, but the assault continued until she lost her life. After the killing, her body was shoved under the bed, where it was later discovered by police.

House Help Subjected to Sexual Assault

As if the murder was not enough, the suspect allegedly turned on the house help. She recounted how he threatened and physically overpowered her before sexually assaulting her in the same house where Susan’s lifeless body lay.

The man later locked the house help and the toddler inside the home with the body before fleeing, taking away the family’s mobile phones in a bid to cover his tracks.

Police Response and Arrest

The incident was reported to the police by concerned neighbors after suspicious silence and distressing noises were heard from the house. When officers arrived, they broke down the door and recovered Susan’s body, which was taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination.

After days of a manhunt, the suspect was finally apprehended on Saturday, August 23, 2025, and is currently being held at Embakasi Police Station. Authorities have confirmed that he will be arraigned in court to face charges of murder, sexual assault, and child endangerment.

Domestic Violence Concerns in Kenya

This horrific case has once again drawn attention to the rising number of domestic violence cases in Nairobi and across Kenya. Experts and human rights advocates have emphasized the urgent need for stronger policies, community awareness, and early intervention in abusive households to prevent such tragedies.

The murder of Susan Nabwire is not just a family tragedy but also a wake-up call about the dangers of gender-based violence, even in homes where partners once felt safe.
