Eldoret, Kenya – Sunday, September 14, 2025: The flashy Ksh14 million luxury matatu “Mood”, owned by George Ruto, was involved in a road accident in Eldoret after being rear-ended by a 14-seater matatu.

The luxury matatu, which had just arrived in the city for the much-anticipated Maili Tisa Park and Chill homecoming event, was struck from behind on Sunday morning, leaving it with visible damage.

Police Arrive At The Scene

Photos shared online show police officers at the scene inspecting the vehicles. The Mood matatu had sustained a dent at the back where the 14-seater matatu collided with it. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported at the time of the accident.

A Matatu That Keeps Making Headlines

Since its launch in July 2025, the luxury matatu has continued to capture national attention. Designed to redefine the public transport experience in Kenya, “Mood” has been the centerpiece at several high-profile events in Nairobi and beyond.

During its official unveiling at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), George Ruto hosted a youth-centered concert, complete with a prayer session, entertainment performances, and a symbolic blessing of the vehicle. The event was followed by a dramatic drive through Nairobi’s CBD, which caused a major spectacle as city residents turned out to witness the unique ride.

Repairs And Modifications

Despite its glamorous debut, “Mood” has already faced challenges. Just days after its launch, parts of the matatu required repairs, leading to temporary withdrawal from service. On its social media pages, the management team assured fans that it was undergoing “touch-ups” and would return to the road soon.

Features Of The Luxury Matatu

What makes “Mood” stand out is its unparalleled luxury in the matatu industry. It features:

  • A 65-inch TV screen
  • A live DJ mixing deck for on-board entertainment
  • Solar panels for energy efficiency
  • High-end bucket seats imported from China

Notably, it is the first 25-seater matatu in Kenya fitted with bucket seats, reducing the standard 32-passenger layout to prioritize comfort and space with a 2-by-1 seating arrangement.

The accident in Eldoret has once again pushed “Mood” into the limelight, with Kenyans expressing relief that no one was injured while questioning the challenges of maintaining such a unique and high-value vehicle on local roads.
