A heated political storm has erupted after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, a vocal United Democratic Alliance (UDA) legislator, publicly castigated Nairobi County Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for what he termed as a “political blunder” in their handling of the attempted impeachment of Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Cherargei did not mince his words, warning that the abrupt reversal of the impeachment motion has severely dented the credibility of the Nairobi County Assembly.
“To Nairobi MCAs, that was a serious fluke and political blunder that shall cost the integrity of the operations of the Nairobi City County Assembly,” Cherargei declared.
PRESIDENT RUTO AND RAILA ODINGA INTERVENE
The impeachment saga took a new twist on Tuesday after President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga held closed-door meetings with their respective party MCAs to defuse rising tensions at City Hall. The high-level intervention led to the shelving of the impeachment motion that had gained massive momentum.
Sources revealed that over 70 MCAs from ODM and UDA had already appended their signatures in support of the motion – just 12 signatures short of the 82 required to table it formally.
WHY MCAS WANTED SAKAJA OUT
The ward representatives had raised several grievances against Sakaja’s administration, including:
- Unfulfilled campaign pledges
- Delayed disbursement of bursaries
- Stalled Ward Development Fund projects
These issues had fueled mounting frustrations among Nairobi residents, making Sakaja the target of impeachment threats.
60-DAY GRACE PERIOD FOR SAKAJA
Following the intervention by the two national leaders, the MCAs agreed to suspend the impeachment motion for 60 days, effectively giving Governor Sakaja a window to resolve the pressing issues raised.
However, Senator Cherargei issued a stern warning to the ward legislators, urging them to act decisively once the grace period lapses if Sakaja fails to deliver.
“Nairobians deserve accountability, not political games. The Assembly must stand firm and protect the interests of the people, not bow to pressure,” he emphasized.
POLITICAL ANALYSTS WEIGH IN
Political analysts argue that the events highlight the growing rift between Nairobi MCAs and Sakaja’s administration, while also exposing the delicate balance of power between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio leadership in the capital city.
As the 60-day countdown begins, all eyes remain fixed on City Hall to see whether Governor Sakaja can salvage his administration or face renewed impeachment threats.
