Monday, August 25, 2025 – A dramatic scandal has hit Kenyan social media after popular slay queen and influencer Njoki Njanja was accused of borrowing small amounts of money from men online and refusing to pay back, despite flaunting an extravagant lifestyle filled with flashy outings and expensive tastes.

According to one victim who publicly shared his ordeal, Njoki initially messaged him on X (formerly Twitter) requesting Ksh 1,000 to buy supper. Believing she was in genuine need, he sent the money. However, just a few days later, she allegedly reached out again, this time asking for Ksh 2,000 urgently. Njoki reportedly claimed she needed the cash to travel to Mombasa to visit a sick friend.

The man, hoping to help, sent the money with the promise that she would refund it once she was financially stable. Weeks have since passed, yet Njoki allegedly cut off communication, ignoring his calls and texts. To make matters worse, the influencer continues to post lavish photos and videos of herself dining at high-end restaurants, attending parties, and flaunting designer clothes — leaving the man feeling cheated and humiliated.

Online Reactions

The revelation has sparked massive debate across social media platforms. Some netizens ridiculed the man for “falling victim to a slay queen strategy,” insisting he should have known better. Others, however, slammed Njoki for being “a social media scammer,” pointing out the contradiction between her luxury lifestyle online and her alleged habit of borrowing and failing to return small amounts of money.

Screenshots shared online show Njoki enjoying glamorous outings while ignoring the debt — a move that many critics say paints her as living a fake life funded by unsuspecting men.

This incident has also reignited the conversation on how some influencers curate false images of wealth to maintain popularity online. Critics warn young people not to be deceived by Instagram glitz, reminding them that some “slay queens” may be hiding financial struggles behind designer bags and luxury cars.

Njoki Njanja is yet to respond to the allegations, but the controversy continues to trend, with many labeling her “the slay queen who borrows to shine.”
