Nairobi, Monday, September 8, 2025 – St. George’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi has been shut down indefinitely following a chaotic night of student unrest that left education officials and police scrambling to restore order.

The turmoil, which involved over 1,800 students, reportedly began late Sunday night after an altercation between a teacher and a Form Three student around 9:30 pm. The student, who wears braces, is said to have suffered a jaw injury during the confrontation.

At the time of the incident, learners were outside observing the rare “blood moon” during the solar eclipse. News of the alleged assault quickly spread, sparking outrage that escalated into a full-blown protest.

The students forced their way out of the school compound by pulling down the main gate before marching onto Dennis Pritt Road. They staged a sit-in and later made their way to the nearby Royal Media Services offices, chanting and demanding action.

Efforts by teachers and local officials to convince the students to return were met with resistance. Police intervened around midnight, managing to herd the learners back into the school compound, though many refused to go back to their dormitories. Officers remained stationed at the gate overnight to monitor the situation.

By Monday morning, senior government and education officials, including Dagoretti North Subcounty Commissioner, Kilimani OCPD Patricia Yegon, and representatives from the Ministry of Education, arrived to address the crisis.

At 10 am, the school administration officially announced the indefinite closure of the institution, giving students just 20 minutes to vacate. Parents had already begun arriving to pick up their children as the decision was communicated.

The closure comes amid rising concerns over cases of student unrest across the country. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway into both the alleged assault on the student and the destruction of school property during the protest.
