Nairobi, Kenya – Popular TikTok creator and Nairobi businessman Godfrey Mwasiaga, widely recognized by his social media alias Kakan Maiyo, has been released on a police bond of Ksh.10,000 following a dramatic arrest that sparked outrage across digital platforms.

The outspoken content creator, known for his hard-hitting videos on government accountability and police brutality, spent two nights in custody at Muthaiga Police Station after being arrested over alleged incitement and “alarming publication.”

ARREST LINKED TO VIRAL VIDEOS TARGETING STATE OPERATIVES

Authorities accused Maiyo of making inflammatory remarks directed at police officers and their families through his TikTok posts. He was initially set to appear before a judge at Milimani Law Courts, but was instead taken back to the police station without formal charges.

“They were asking if I was part of a group or movement, but I made it clear—those were my personal views, and I stand by them,” Maiyo stated after his release.

TIKTOK STAR’S PHONE CONFISCATED, LAWYERS CALL CHARGES “BASELESS”

Maiyo’s mobile phone was seized during his detention for further investigations, which his legal team has condemned as excessive and unlawful.

“The accusations don’t hold water. Kakan is a peaceful man and a servant of God. These charges do not meet the legal threshold,” said his lawyer, Phillip Maiyo.

“A NATIONAL DIALOGUE IS NEEDED” – FAMILY CALLS FOR PEACEFUL CONVERSATION

His uncle, Peter Kakan, called on President Ruto to initiate a national dialogue to address civic unrest and promote constructive engagement between citizens and the government.

“My prayer to the President is that we come together for a national conversation—so that everyone understands their role in nation-building,” he urged.

KAKAN MAIYO’S ONLINE CRITICISM OF THE STATE DRAWS ATTENTION

Kakan Maiyo has gained notoriety for using his TikTok platform to challenge injustices, particularly around extrajudicial killings and police crackdowns during protests.

One of his most viral videos features a stern warning to security agents allegedly involved in enforced disappearances, stating:

“A time is coming when you’ll go to abduct someone and not return to your station. The wrath of God is upon you. The pain you’ve caused these families—you’ll feel it too.”

He further declared:

“No arrest, no abduction, no killing will silence Kenyans. It’s a waste of time.”

ARREST VIDEO SPARKS ONLINE FURY

Footage circulating on Wednesday evening showed three plainclothes officers forcefully arresting Maiyo inside a building, pinning him against a wall before escorting him away—triggering widespread condemnation online under the hashtags #FreeKakan and #StopPoliceBrutality.
