A deadly road accident involving a Royal Liner bus and a flatbed trailer has left several feared dead and dozens injured along the busy Kisumu–Busia Highway on Monday, August 11, 2025. The tragic crash occurred just past Lela in Maseno when the trailer, attempting to overtake at a sharp bend, rammed into the rear side of the passenger bus, causing catastrophic damage.

According to eyewitnesses, the collision also involved a fuel tanker, creating a chaotic scene on the road. The impact tore through the driver’s side of the bus, leaving it completely scraped and exposing the interior. Emergency responders, including police officers and medical teams, rushed to the site to rescue trapped passengers and manage the growing crowd.

Although the exact death toll remains unconfirmed at the time of reporting, authorities have confirmed that multiple passengers sustained critical injuries and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

The accident site has since been cordoned off as traffic police carry out initial investigations. The Kisumu–Busia Highway is one of Kenya’s busiest transport routes, connecting several major towns in the western region, and has recently seen a worrying surge in fatal accidents.

Series of Deadly Accidents in Recent Days

This latest incident comes barely 24 hours after another fatal crash involving an ENA Coach bus in Mai Mahiu. In that accident, a trailer with failed brakes ploughed into the bus, which was travelling from Nairobi to Migori, causing the vehicle to overturn in the Escarpment area. Two passengers — an adult woman and a minor — lost their lives, while several others were left injured.

In yet another grim case, a school bus carrying mourners overturned at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu–Kakamega Road, killing 21 people instantly. The death toll from that accident has since risen to 26 after more victims succumbed to injuries in hospital. Preliminary findings indicate the driver lost control before the vehicle veered off the road.

Authorities Respond to Rising Road Carnage

The sharp increase in deadly crashes this month has prompted swift intervention from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS). In a joint statement, authorities vowed to intensify road safety enforcement and investigate the underlying causes of these tragedies.

The planned measures include:

  • Strict speed monitoring for public service vehicles (PSVs) and commercial trucks.
  • Crackdowns on overloading of goods and excess passengers.
  • Enforcement against PSVs operating outside licensed routes.
  • Anti-drunk driving operations along major highways.

Officials have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially along accident-prone stretches such as the Kisumu–Busia Highway, and to avoid reckless overtaking and speeding.

As investigations into the Royal Liner bus accident continue, the nation mourns yet another devastating loss of lives on its roads, reinforcing the urgent need for safer driving practices and stronger enforcement of traffic regulations.
